Valuable, elegant, and durable, oak is one of the most commonly used and appreciated woods in parquet production. Oak is available in two main families: French oak and Slavonian oak. Both have specific characteristics, uses, and prerogatives.
French Oak Parquet: Characteristics
Let’s start with French oak. It is derived from a tree with particularly long and imposing branches, widespread and cultivated in forests in the transalpine regions of Allier, Nevers, Aquitaine, Limousin, and the Vosges department. This variety is therefore suitable for creating rustic and aged parquet that stands out for the movement of its grain and broader flame pattern. It has warm colors and hazelnut shades that make it ideal for natural finishes. French oak is called “fine-grained” due to the dense arrangement of the tree’s growth rings.
Slavonian Oak Parquet: A First Choice
On the other hand, Slavonian oak is defined as “coarse-grained wood“, lighter and more elegant, and for this reason recommended for first choices. It originates from Slavonia, a geographical region in eastern Croatia, consisting of fertile plains, watered by large rivers like the Drava and the Danube. It is derived from slender trees, but with smaller branches. It is particularly suitable for creating wooden floors with straighter grain and smaller knots and is considered by many to be the true king of wood for parquet. It is a versatile material that adapts to various formats and installation types such as Hungarian or Italian herringbone and French herringbone patterns.
